Runewords are really confusing if you don't have a guide, but with a guide, they shouldn't be too complicated.īasically, if you insert certain combinations of runes into certain item types in a certain order, the result is a "runeword" that has all the stats of the runes you inserted plus other (sometimes very powerful) stats. If you play stronger recommended builds, then you can usually do a lot more with a lot less when it comes to equipment. The good news is, there are a ton of available resources available on-line, most of which will outline gear recommendations and builds for each class. Diablo 2 is an optimizer's playground but it's pretty punishing and grindy if you're the sort of person who just experiments casually with builds. There are a lot of skills that are traps, and there's a big wall starting around Nightmare Act V or early Hell difficulty that if you don't understand the tools at your disposal, will really frustrate you. They often are the endgame in and of themselves. Runewords are a part of that depth and complexity. ![]() D2 needs a guide, or a depth of knowledge to be played successfully. In short, you're not doing anything wrong. That was how they kept the game interesting in the absence of an "endgame", instead of pushing to make every skill viable. It's an artifact from the original game, where balance changes and character builds changed from one major patch to the next. I don't find runewords to be confusing, but I've been playing D2 for 20ish years.ĭ2 has an established "meta" that is a lot of builds and skills don't work well without monumental investment - these days in the form of runewords. You're playing a sub-optimal build, looking at runewords that are either incredibly expensive, or not suited to what you're trying to build. ![]()
